[2007-02-20] 65 years old man works hard to make romance bloom. But the modern world isn't helping.
Ivan Thompson works hard to make romance bloom. But the modern world isn't helping. For 17 years, Thompson, known as Cowboy Cupid or Cowboy del Amor, has prided himself in a keen ability to pair lonely American men with Mexican women. His sees his job as bridging countries, languages and cultures. Now, the man who calls himself America's premier matchmaker is fighting a nemesis that, just like love, knows no borders: the Internet. Thompson, 65, says matchmaking isn't what it used to be. Online dating is cutting him out as a middleman. "The Internet is weeding me out," Thompson said with a T [...]

[2007-02-19] Is an online date somehow less significant than one that happens organically
So much for dinner and a movie. Any single person who has endured the rigors of dating in the 21st century knows all about its peaks and pitfalls. Is it ever appropriate to go dutch when the check arrives? Is an online date somehow less significant than one that happens organically? And don't even get us started on whether it's OK to break the three-date rule before romping in the hay. Because the different styles of modern dating means there are more variables than a math scholar can count, we checked with social-mating experts and South Bay singles to help understand the most common sorts [...]
[2007-02-19] Online date warning
ROSES are red and violets are blue but online dating is not the path to 'I love you'. Internet dating is becoming a partner-finding method of choice for a lonely hearts generation too tired or too busy to leave their own homes. But online daters have little prospect of success in finding the love of their lives because web relationships are dominated by wishful thinking, researchers say. Daters imagine their virtual heart-throb to be much more suited to them than they really are and then, when they meet up in reality, their hopes of a dream lover are rapidly shattered, with women being e [...]
[2007-02-19] Read our list of most popular Wedding Rip-offs
1. Is that a lawyer cutting your cake? Some hotels and country clubs have ridiculous charges such as "cake cutting fees"--a 50¢ to $2 per guest charge to simply slice a wedding cake.2. Milli Vanilli demo tape. Here's a modern scam--wedding bands that use other studio musicians to record the tracks to their demo videos. The result: What you hear isn't always what you get.3. Disintegrating bridesmaids dresses. Some dresses for bridesmaids are so cheap, they unravel during the reception. Why? While they cost $100 to $200, most bridesmaids dresses are made of cheap polyester with glued-on det [...]
[2007-02-19] An Ottawa-based group is trying to help local Muslims connect by organizing singles events
It's hard enough to meet the man or woman of your dreams if your requirements are restricted to the usual criteria: tall or short, athletic or artistic, smoker or non-smoker. Add adherence to the tenets of Islam to the list and you're looking at a pretty limited pool of potential partners in most Canadian cities. An Ottawa-based group is trying to help local Muslims connect by organizing singles events, including a tea recently. "We're trying to fill a gap that's needed in our community," says Sameena Khan, a 32-year-old married mother of three who runs North American Muslim Matrimonial Link [...]

[2007-02-19] International zoo dating service.
Two months ago, scientists searching for a species of Chinese dolphin made a heartbreaking discovery: it was extinct. Zoo Atlanta, and other zoos around the world, are trying to keep that from happening with other species like giant pandas, tigers, and mountain gorillas. They’ve come up with what is essentially an international zoo dating service. The staff at Zoo Atlanta is hoping for rhino love in an effort to boost the population of black rhinos in zoos, and maybe eventually in the wild.“Species survival plans really are an international dating service to build a rescue colony of animals for [...]
[2007-02-19] Research shows that the chemistry between two people happens in the first few minutes of dating
At least, that’s what a local speed dating company says. Speed dating is based on this principle: You spend a few minutes with one person, then the bell rings and you move on to the next date. The Moore Public Library held its own speed dating event Wednesday night — Valentine’s Day — for area singles.I went to it because it sounded funny and a little intriguing. But I left it a believer in, at the least, the legitimacy of speed dating. The participants, nine men and about twice as many women, began by sitting in plastic chairs in a bare room at the library. Seven tables formed a semi-circle in [...]
[2007-02-19] I Love You, Let's Meet . Adventures in Online Dating
An attractive widow finds sudden romance under the Big Top. Within three weeks of online courting, she's engaged to a circus clown. Another woman, an English teacher, loves metaphors. So it stands to reason that she was crushed when, on her first date with a man with outrageously large ears, she learned that he was not a good listener. These are just two women I know who are part of "an estimated forty million people" who have tried online dating. With such an astounding number, it's no surprise that Virginia Vitzthum, a former sex columnist for Salon.com, set out to untangle this Web of match [...]

He was active in a Filipino support group in Melbourne while Charo wrote for a Hong Kong community newspaper for Filipinos. Charo was interviewing Reyvi's parents who were working in Hong Kong. The parents became fond of Charo and decided [...]
[2007-02-19] In the world of polyamory, relationships are concentric, overlapping, fluid and unbound by numbers.
Cherie Ve Ard is worried. As she waits for her burrito at an Orlando Tijuana Flats, she wonders if she's giving her three boyfriends enough attention. There's Franklin Veaux, 40, her long-distance love from Atlanta, who has surprised her with a visit. He's holding her left hand and kissing her neck. Her longtime live-in boyfriend, Fritz Neumann, 40, cradles her right hand on his knee. And she gazes googly-eyed across the table at her newest love, Chris Dunphy, 34, of California. They met in a Toyota Prius chat room in June, and their conversation was so intense he drove cross-country to her [...]
[2007-02-19] A potential bride should demonstrate, in this order: moral excellence, common sense, desire for improvement and fondness for children.
A potential bride should demonstrate, in this order: moral excellence, common sense, desire for improvement and fondness for children. Or so was the prevailing sentiment among the upper class in the 19th century. This lesson was one of several at Saturday's Valentine's Day-inspired program at Duke Homestead and Tobacco History Museum titled "19th Century Courtship and Marriage." The program, a PowerPoint presentation and speech by Alison Holcomb, an N.C. State University graduate student in public history, ran three times during the day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and lasted about 45 minute [...]
[2007-02-19] The dating odds are even stiffer -- for every 20 singles you meet, you might find one with whom you click.
I love matchmakers. I love the idea of it setting people up and watching them fall in love. I love the people who do it the clucking yentas and the sleek Alicia Silverstone types and all of the amateurs in between. I've even tried it--I'm 0 for 37. Yes, I suck.Susan Shapiro doesn't. With 12 marriages, seven long term relationships and about 500 we-totally-hit-it-off dates under her extroverted belt, the author of 'Secrets of a Fix-Up Fanatic: How to Meet and Marry Your Match' doesn't do it for the money. She does it for the karma.Oh yeah and because it works. "Having a comrad [...]
[2007-02-19] How to become an accomplished, independent and happy woman in Russia? Be a sexy bitch, says a popular new course
In a country where women are often referred to as the weaker sex and politics and business are dominated by macho men, a Russian woman’s quest for success is never easy. But psychologist Vladimir Rakovsky claims to have found the recipe for a woman to achieve whatever she wants: manipulate men using her feminine charms. In his Stervologiya (Bitchology) class, he makes his students practice such things as saying “I have a big ass, do you want to touch it?” or squeezing their breasts while cooing “Hey mister!” Feminists dismiss the course as fostering old stereotypes, treating women as sex ob [...]
[2007-02-19] The status of women in Russia has gone down in the aftermath of the new economic policies that has been introduced in the country in the last 15 years
The status of women in Russia has gone down in the aftermath of the new economic policies that has been introduced in the country in the last 15 years. Women had better political representation in the former Soviet Union as they had a specific quota, while at present, women's representation was less than 10 per cent in the Russian Parliament (Dumas), Tatiana Chertoritskaya, a member of Dumas and the president of All Russian Social Democratic Women's Congress said. Ms. Chertoritskaya, who has come to the city with a six-member delegation of representatives from various NGOs in Russia, was spe [...]
[2007-02-19] Slim chance of African single moms ever getting hitched
African single mothers in South Africa are unlikely to ever get married because of a shortage of eligible men. A study by two academics from the University of Amsterdam has revealed that the options of African single mothers were reduced by the low sex ratio of 92 men to 100 women between the ages of 20 and 40 in the African community. The study, which used the latest available statistics of the Census SA 2001, also found that 48% of African single mothers stood very little chance of ever getting hitched, partly because of their improving social status. “This is huge compared to their whit [...]
[2007-02-19] How a quest to find 'the one' led to the Worst Date Ever
From the time I was a very little girl, I dreamed of one day getting married. This is not unusual, as most little girls go to sleep at night with visions of big white dresses floating in their heads. What was different about me was that my fantasy never included a groom.I never really understood why it was even necessary to have a groom for the wedding. Doesn't everyone know that wedding days are for the bride? But as I grew older, I understood that no one can be a bride without first finding a groom. And so, at the age of 14, I started dating. Surely I would find my future husband, put on the [...]
[2007-02-19] A Q&A with an etiquette expert on who should pay, how to dress and when to call next
I was having lunch recently with Victor Greto, who is a coworker and our newest blogger, when we started talking about dating. Specifically, who should pay for a date.Victor, along with most of my more gentlemanly male friends, said he believes the man should always pay for the date regardless of who did the asking out (yes ladies, he’s single and available). Yet the men I know say they really appreciate it when a woman at least goes through the motions of offering to pay. Why? Besides proving that she’s not in it for the free filet mignon, the offer indicates that she would approach a relatio [...]
[2007-02-19] Where to draw the line with being sensitive
Javier is a 20-something-year-old bachelor, an expert in the nature of the modern man. Week by week, he will clue you in on what men really want - and what really goes on in those heads of theirs. SO my friend, let's call him Mac, has a real bad problem. He's been telling me every time we've spoken for the past few weeks that he's disillusioned with women. No he isn't thinking about making a sexual 180 or anything like that, but he's lost faith in having successful relationships with women. As he explains it, he doesn't see why he should get worked up over a girl when sooner or later they al [...]
[2007-02-19] When financial opposites merge, they often end up kissing love goodbye.
Of course relationships are tough work, filled with endless compromises — and many couples feel the challenges smack in their billfolds. According to a 2006 Money magazine poll, 84 percent of respondents reported that finances caused tension in their marriages, and 15 percent said they fought about money several times a month. Sharyn Sooho, a Boston divorce attorney and co-founder of divorcenet.com, notes that one spouse earning significantly more than the other — or experiencing overwhelming success — is a leading cause of divorce. If you think about it, that’s actually not too surprising. [...]

[2007-02-17] Websites of the Russian Movement against Non-Legal Immigration, as well as a number of anti-fascist websites stopped operating today.
At the moment the main internet resources of the Russian nationalists are not available. The dpni.org and dpni2.org are not operating. The Ring of Patriotic resources (www.rossija.inf) and the Russian National Unity websites are out of service. However the Movement’s life journal and the ru.altermedia.info do operate. The reason for the foul-up might be the latest developments in the Stavropol region and attempts by particular circles to block this information. The websites might also be out of service because of hackers’ back-to-back attacks on behalf of the nationalist and anti-fascist m [...]

On March 8, millions of people across the globe will celebrate International Women’s Day. Protests, events and declarations will recognize the contributions of women as leaders of progressive movements past and present and advance our demands for change in the future. The story of International Women’s Day began in New York City in 1909, when 20,000 women garment workers went on strike for 13 cold winter weeks to win better pay and working conditions.
