[2007-06-29] KEEPING a loved one sweet through birthdays, anniversaries and romantic gestures now comes with a £750 annual price tag, new figures reveal
But while the average partner spends about £62 a month on gifts, up to half a million men with big budgets or guilty consciences will spend a huge £500 a month making their loved one happy. For most, it means remembering to buy something on special occasions, and the odd trinket in between, whether it is to say sorry or thank you, said the study by finance website MoneyExpert.com. While £62 a month - or £744 a year - may seem generous, it equates to just 3 per cent of an average UK salary of £25,000, said the research based on a survey of 2,300 adults. Men are th [...]
[2007-06-29] Women in Ukraine live 75 years on average and men –60.5
UN News Center reports that life expectancy has increased up to 15 years during recent five years reaching 64 for men and 68 for women. These are average statistical world figures. Women in Ukraine live 72.5 years on average and men –60.5. The figures are lower in Russia: here life expectancy of men is 58.7 years, and Russian women live 71 years on average. In Byelorussia these figures are correspondingly 74 and 63. But in Georgia men live 67 years on average. The best situation is in Armenia, where men live more than 68 and women 75 years. There exists a great difference in figures of life ex [...]
[2007-06-29] A close, romantic relationship is beneficial to your physical health
Having a heartthrob can help your heart, according to Dr. Steven R. Steinhubl, director of cardiovascular education and clinical research at the University of Kentucky. "We don't know what it is about a close and loving relationship that affects our cardiovascular health, we just know the findings are so consistent," Steinhubl said. After bypass surgery, after heart attacks, after staying in intensive care, the prognosis is always better" if the patient has someone he or she loves to go home to, he said. "There is no physiological explanation why patients who have a spouse should get less [...]
[2007-06-29] There are 185,000 more single women than single men in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut urban areas combined
According to the piece, which collated census data, the East Coast is awash in single femmes, while the West Coast is single-dude-heavy, which is why it smells like beer and gym socks out there. All joking aside, the story attached a number to something we’ve been feeling for a while (especially this spring)—single women are legion in the city, and the local culture makes it especially easy to remain unattached. What we discovered is that, despite ridiculous media portrayals of New York’s single women as ambitious man-hungry climbers who put on a brave face while secretly fretting over their s [...]
[2007-06-29] Three women, two Californians and a New Yorker, have been charged with stealing more than $6 million from investors in a housing fix-and-flip scam
District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said the New York woman, Jennifer Wilkov of Brooklyn, used her job at American Express Financial Advisors to help her West Coast confederates find 23 local people who were victimized by the scheme. Wilkov, 38, solicited investors between 2005 and 2006 for Carla Zimbalist, 62, of Beverly Hills, and Pam Chanla, a native of Laos who is also known as Sayasith Khammanivong, 33, a resident of Alhambra, Calif., Morgenthau said. Prosecutors said Wilkov received a total of $145,000 in commissions and consulting fees from Zimbalist and Chanla for recruiting investors. [...]
[2007-06-29] Online dating sites might get most of the attention these days when it comes to meeting that special someone, but a new program at Roseville's Maidu Library is adding another option for local singles.
Singles, at the library? No, there isn't any alcohol or loud music involved. Instead, try thoughtful discussion among like-minded, literary-oriented adults, said librarian Carol Meadows. She's leading the library's recently begun Singles Book Club, which started last Thursday with a discussion about Nelson DeMille's 2006 thriller, "Wild Fire." The free-ranging, informal meetings are meant to be a fun way for singles to share thoughts on books and meet those who also have an interest in reading. "It's to mix and socialize about literature," Meadows said. "It's really, essentially, for people to [...]
[2007-06-22] Virgin brides
THEIR sales pitch is provocative, to say the least: Want to find happiness by marrying a pretty woman who is a medically-certified virgin? The Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware) is calling for the Government to penalise by suspending or revoking operating licences of matchmaking agencies that flog foreign women in a demeaning manner.Citing how an agency offered 15 mainland Chinese brides without agency fees to potential grooms to mark its 15th anniversary two months ago, Aware said: "This lack of governance over such marketing practices of matchmaking agencies must be rectifie [...]
[2007-06-22] A French winemaker is trying to help people find romance with a new vintage that links them up with a special online dating site
The "Soif de Coeur" (A Thirst for Romance) bottles of rosé, red or white wine contain a unique code in their labels that you tap into the Web site in the hope of finding your perfect match. "You buy a bottle and there is a ticket on the back which tells you what to do," said Michel Blaquie, the director of Imaginform ,which teamed up with France's Omnivins wine company to work on the idea. The French wine, in bottles of girly pink or boy blue, is on sale in supermarkets around France, Belgium and Switzerland, and the producers are hoping to sell it in Japan and Russia soon. Since it wa [...]
[2007-06-22] Prosecutors in Russia said eight men have been charged with killing 15 women allegedly because the women refused to work as prostitutes.
The suspects are from Nizhny Tagil in the Ural Mountains, the Moscow Times reported. The bodies were found in a mass grave in February near the town of Levikha, between Nizhny Tagil and Yekaterinburg.None of the victims was older than 26 and the two youngest were a 13-year-old and her 15-year-old friend, investigators told the Moscow Times. Police said that the two girls, who disappeared in July 2005, were lured to an apartment where they were raped and then ordered to take up prostitution. The victims were all reported missing between 2002 and 2005. [2007-06-22] Most men assume that when they get married, dating's over
I thought so too, until the day my wife pointed out to me that we hadn't done anything alone - as a couple - for years. At first I was defensive. I was sure we were doing lots of things together. Then I thought about it for a while. I realized that our "alone" time always involved a child, family or friends. Our married life had become a series of group activities, family parties and the occasional drink with another couple who had the luck of finding a babysitter and some free time. Somewhere in the midst of starting a family, we forgot about the relationship tha [...]
[2007-06-22] Heavy consumption of alcohol from drinks as well as sources including medicinal remedies and cleaning agents may be a leading cause of death among working-age Russian men
They tracked 1,750 men who died between 2003 and 2005 in Izhevsk, an industrial city of about 700,000 people in the Ural mountains, and an equal number of men who were still alive. Writing in the Lancet medical journal, researchers led by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Health epidemiologist David Leon concluded that dangerous drinking caused 43 percent of deaths of men ages 25 to 54 in Izhevsk. The researchers viewed dangerous drinking as heavy consumption of alcoholic beverages such as vodka, beer and others as well as consumption of products containing large concentrations of alcohol [...]
[2007-06-19] The internet-based virtual world Second Life may have a serious impact on people's real life relationships
Baroness Susan Greenfield, director of the Royal Institution, said she feared users of the popular simulation could abandon the messy intimacy of "real-life" human relations for two-dimensional liaisons in the virtual world. Second Life was started in San Francisco in 1999 and now has seven million players who can create their own characters, known as avatars, buy goods, throw parties and build their own homes. However, Baroness Greenfield says the implications have not been thought through. "People who dismiss it as a game will be in for a rude awakening," she said. "This will have a huge i [...]
[2007-06-18] US Senate leaders have agreed to revive a stalled immigration bill that could see tighter border controls but offer 12m illegal immigrants citizenship.
"The leaders have agreed on a way forward," a spokesman for Democrat Majority Leader Harry Reid said. The announcement came after the president offered $4.4bn (£2.2bn) more for border security, to be funded by fines taken from illegal immigrants. The debate collapsed last week after opposition from some Republicans. The latest deal was reached by Senate leaders after hours of intense talks. The bill is expected to return to the Senate floor for additional debate by next week. Key election issue Earlier this week, President George W Bush met Republican leaders opposed to the bi [...]
[2007-06-18] Two out of three people believe that there are too many migrants in Britain
The far-reaching impact of the recent waves of immigration from eastern Europe is laid bare in the report by the Commission on Integration and Cohesion. A Mori poll carried out for the commission found that 68 per cent of those questioned thought there were "too many migrants in Britain," a view shared by 47 per cent of Asians and 45 per cent of black respondents. It also showed that 56 per cent of people believed some groups - mainly immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees - receive unfair priority in the allocation of housing, health services and education. The report said the findings sh [...]
[2007-06-15] Excessive alcohol consumption is being blamed for a big rise in deaths from the liver disease cirrhosis in Britain.
While deaths from the disease are falling elsewhere, a Lancet study shows they have soared in England, Scotland and Wales since the 1950s. Total recorded alcohol consumption in the UK is estimated to have doubled between 1960 and 2002. The study was carried out by King's College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Experts said the UK Government had not done enough to try to tackle the problem. New licensing laws came in at the end of last year allowing bars, pubs and clubs in England and Wales to serve alcohol around the clock. The researchers [...]
[2007-06-12] There was a time when the ordinary woman's only path to wealth was a good marriage.
There was a time when the ordinary woman's only path to wealth was a good marriage. But research today suggests that not only is she now rather adept at generating her own money, she is actually better at it than her male counterpart. In fact, according to Barclays Wealth Management, women millionaires will outnumber their male counterparts by 2020. The report indicates that by then 53 per cent of millionaires will be women, as the number of female entrepreneurs and business people continues to grow More than four fifths of women with investable assets of more than £100,000 have generat [...]
[2007-06-09] Romance sent to Siberia in mania to marry money
THEY came to the party in miniskirts and stilettos - hundreds of young women prowling the dance floor for men. Forget love and commitment, they wanted someone with a Ferrari, a jet and a flat in Monte Carlo. "A good millionaire hunter never lets anyone know she's a hunter," said Kira Vlasova, 19, a slim blonde. "She has to have an alluring look." No subtleties here. The recent event at a posh Moscow nightclub was called Marry a Millionaire, and it and others like it seek to capitalise on a growing market of available young women looking for husbands among Russia's new wealthy class. To help [...]
[2007-06-09] One of the main characteristics of online dating is the speed at which a relationship conducted largely by email can become intense
So-called ‘Gen X’ online daters tend to be well-paid, professional people who are ‘highly instrumental’ and organised in their mission to meet the one special person with whom they can establish an intimate real-world relationship, according to a University of Melbourne study. Sociologists Dr Millsom Henry-Waring and Dr Jo Barraket found online daters pursue a means to an end. Evidence suggests they fill out truthful in dating profiles because if they later meet the other person any ‘enhancements’ will be obvious. Dr Henry-Waring says her investigation into the sociology of on-line dating [...]
[2007-06-08] See dating as a wonderful time to find out about other people and what they are like.
The recently divorced woman at my seminar needed to date a lot of men to find out how "off" she was in her ability to see what is good and to pick a good man. Without dating for the sake of learning, she would not do that. She would just jump into another relationship where she felt "in love." You might have no clue what is "out there" in the world of the opposite sex. I sent one young man out on a date with someone I knew he would not be attracted to. He was looking for a certain type, and she would not normally have been "on his list." Afterward, he told me he had the best four hours talkin [...]
[2007-06-08] See dating as a wonderful time to find out about yourself and how you need to change.
When you are dating to learn, you can monitor your feelings, reactions, and character as you meet different kinds of people. One woman I know was always drawn to passive men who were kind; however, her dating experiences with these men were frustrating. She realized that her tastes in men were coming out of a wounded place inside of her: Her father had been overly aggressive, and she was afraid of strong men. She needed to get to a place where a stronger man would not feel like her aggressive father and push her buttons. She did this by dating stronger men and making the changes inside to wher [...]
[2007-06-08] See dating as an end in and of itself.
How do you know if marriage is in the cards for you, and, if it is, how do you know when it will happen? I, for one, did not marry until well into my thirties. I loved my dating years. They were a lot of fun, and I had wonderful experiences getting to know some really good women. Dating is an activity where you do fun, meaningful things with interesting people. This is a great goal in and of itself. If you are not having fun dating, then something is wrong. You might be judging each person you go out with by whether or not he or she is "marriage material." If you decide he or she is not, then [...]
[2007-06-08] See dating in a way that takes the pressure off.
One woman I worked with was so afraid of rejection she sabotaged her dating life. She worried so much about whether or not a guy was going to like her that she could not enjoy the date. As a result, she was always less than herself, and the guy never got to see who she really was. She actually experienced much more rejection because the guys she dated never really saw all she had to offer. I advised her to look at a date as an activity to get to know someone and spend some time doing something fun, with no pressure. She stopped looking for a potential mate or serious relationship, and it all [...]
[2007-06-08] See dating as an opportunity to love and serve others.
Just as you learn as you date, so do the people you go out with. When you treat your dates as you would want them to treat you and show them what a good man or woman is like, you have served them. When you have relationships with people, you leave a wake behind, similar to the backwash a boat leaves behind. When you date, leave a wake where the person is better off for having known you. Dating is a give and take. If you only see it as "taking," you are not getting it. See dating as a time to show others what being treated well looks like; then you help them see what is good in life, and you l [...]
[2007-06-08] See dating as an opportunity to grow in skills.
Dating is a place to practice how to relate to other people. If you know you need to be more direct, for example, practice with your dates. If you need to learn how to open up and talk about yourself, your feelings, and your wants, practice it in dating. If you need to learn how to confront others and deal with conflict, practice it in dating. Or maybe you need to learn how to deny yourself, listen to others, or be less self-centered. Dating is a place where you can bring all the parts of you that need spiritual growth. If you never learn basic relationship skills before that special someone [...]
[2007-06-08] Foreign spouses empowered through study and self-help
They did not come to a new country on the Mayflower to get away from religious persecution in England as the early American settlers did in 1620. These newcomers, mostly women from Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, came to Taiwan by plane to get away from poverty and search for better lives with their Taiwanese husbands. The stream of immigrants started roughly in the early 1990s. The new immigrants, as well as their sons and daughters, just like immigrants in other parts of the world, have to deal with new challenges and opportunities, coupled with cultural [...]
[2007-06-08] Heart of Russia in NYC
Through whatever mechanism Russian immigrants managed to make the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn their own — be it demographic evolution or intelligent real estate design — things sure worked out well. They landed a prime section of beachfront, right near the subway but far enough away not to be overrun by gentrifying artistes, as happened in Puerto Rican Williamsburg. You can do Russia in Manhattan, but the heart of any true Russian weekend here must be a trip on the B or Q train out to Brighton Beach. Or, preferably, two trips: one on a sunny day, the better to sit on the boardwalk and [...]
[2007-06-07] For those who prefer to sit on the road and wait (naked truth about men profiles on russian dating sites)
I placed my ad as an experiment on several Russian dating sites ( few of them were very famous) under the name of a 57 years old amercian man. I even did not add any pictures to my profile. I got so many letters on the first day. And most of those women were 20-30 years younger.  My head began to spin :-), If not the one thing! I will tell you where those letters came from.   When a lady comes to the Agency, she fills the application form and she also writes the first formal letter to a foreigner:   “Hello, - she writes – Dear …, My name is [...]
[2007-06-07] Increase your chances to find a Russian wife by 100%
When I am asked how to increase your chances, a Russian proverb always comes across my mind: “Water never flows under lying stone”. You also have similar sayings in your culture such as “No pain, no gains”. The experience of many generations is encoded in this simple but capacious phrase. You can sit at the road and wait when She passes by. You can sit like this all your life! Another option is action. Let’s go from abstract to real. My first example is about people who place their ads at Dating Services and wait for answers. Let leave them sitting and wish them good luck, although I don [...]
[2007-06-06] Internet Matchmakers Migrate To Cellphones, Promising More-Immediate Results
Earlier this week, Jeff Blum was out buying a sandwich when his mind wandered toward his social life. So he got out his cellphone and sent a text message with his work ZIP Code to MeetMoi, a new mobile dating service. Within minutes, his phone received the profile of a woman who worked nearby, and the two began exchanging messages about where they worked, their professions -- and meeting up for a drink. "I liked the fact that we were talking right then and not waiting for emails to go back and forth," says Mr. Blum, who is 24 years old. "It all happened right away." Millions of consumers h [...]
[2007-06-06] merging the age-old Korean matchmaking traditions with the vibrant South Korean Internet culture
Matchmaking services have been on the Web for years, in South Korea and elsewhere. But Lee insists that his system is the most scientifically advanced around, providing South Koreans wary of fraud or too shy to propose, or just too busy to date, with a hassle-free way of finding Mr. or Ms. Right. For example, Kim Su Jong, a 29-year-old pharmacist, has listed more than 330 pieces of information about herself - everything from her height, weight, blood type and drinking and smoking habits to her monthly pay, personality preferences in a spouse, and the jobs and academic credentials of everyone [...]
