[2006-12-26] Road wars: drivers versus pedestrians
Russian drivers do not show much respect to pedestrians – this fact is known to both those sitting in a car and those trying not to get under the wheels. The tradition to stop a car and let people cross the road has never been common practice in Russia. This is why foreign travellers may sometimes feel confused when they are about to be hit by a car and hear the driver shout swearing. According to the Administrative code if a driver hits a pedestrian and the latter gets inconsiderable injuries, the accident can be settled by fining the driver and depriving him of driving licence. If a pedest [...]
[2006-12-26] Cars invaded Moscow: scientists beating the alarm
Moscow has managed to outstrip New York and take one of the world leading positions in the number of cars per square kilometre. By the end of November 2006 the number of cars in Moscow is expected to exceed 3 million 200 thousand; scientists worry that busy traffic in the capital of Russia poses a threat of ecological catastrophe. In project there exist various prospects of solving the problem: paid roads in central parts of the city, the toughest control over petrol quality, ban on transit for drivers from other regions. Authorities are planning to put most of the ideas into life within the s [...]
[2006-12-26] Comfortable Russia is not a Utopia
Special economic zones for tourism and recreation will broaden the borders of Russia. Well, not literally of course. But tourists will have a chance not only to see Moscow and Saint Petersburg, but also to comfortably travel to other regions, provided with modern infrastructure, good hotels and outstanding cultural programmes. Most Russian regions have always had much to show: ancient churches, buildings of the tsar epoch, magnificent picturesque nature, thousands of beautiful rivers, lakes, hills, plains, and mountains. Every region has its own allure. But lack of infrastructure made them u [...]
[2006-12-26] Fools and roads - traditional Russian problems
A famous Russian proverb states that there are two main problems in Russia: fools and roads, but apparently the latter of the two problems is just a consequence of the first one. Undoubtedly, Russia is amongst the countries with a great number of roads, but the state roads here are in, stands far behind than that in leading countries. This would be consistent to deem that the government of the biggest country in the world must be interested in improving the situation, and it seemingly is: one can easily trace a lot of “roads-in-need” talks in media and multitude of news about roads reconstruct [...]

[2006-12-25] Many migrant women in Korea scarred in broken marriages
As she sweeps her broom across the dirt-settled floor of a furniture factory in Namyangju, a desolate city just outside Seoul, Ella Quinones suddenly halts and drops her head as if she were about to pray -- or cry.She knows this wasn't meant to be this way.Standing in the run-down factory where everyone is off to their families, the 30-year-old Philippine woman wishes she had her son waiting at home, too, even though she knows he won't be there.Quinones moved to South Korea's remote farming area of Gochang, 280 kilometers south of Seoul, six years ago, after she decided to marry a South Korean [...]
[2006-12-25] Disillusioned Western men seek to Thai the knot
After a series of doomed relationships with American women, Marc Sullivan came to Bangkok in a bid to meet Miss Right at last. “I could not find anybody in the States. There was nothing in America for me. That’s why I’m here,” says the clean-cut 52-year-old bachelor, who bears a passing resemblance to Hollywood actor Michael Douglas. [2006-12-25] Strict scrutiny of matchmaking agencies urged
A women’s advocacy group called on Monday for a governing body to regulate Singapore matchmaking agencies that offer foreign brides, claiming the businesses are “largely unmonitored and unregulated.” While the agencies conduct strict checks on the sexual health and virginity of the prospective brides, the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) found too few questions were asked regarding the marital status, criminal records, physical health and financial status of the eager grooms. Many of the men still traditionally choose Malaysians and Indonesians. Brides from Vietnam and [...]
[2006-12-25] Siberia's disappearing languages underscore a chilling cultural shift
The dying flickers of the Teleut language can be found here in southern Siberia, where the coal industry blackens the sky and hems in what once was a thriving nomadic nation enlivened by shamans and holy mountains. In most Teleut households in this hamlet of tumbledown cabins and garden plots, only Russian is spoken. Teleut is kept alive solely by Bekovo's older generation and by 3rd-grade teacher Marina Kushakova, who once a week teaches a handful of 9-year-old Teleuts the rudiments of a language as foreign to her pupils as French. "The word for mother?" Kushakova, speaking in Russian, asks [...]
[2006-12-25] Singles link up to push for rights
In the television series "Sex and the City," there is a moment when Carrie Bradshaw does the math on being single. Adding up the thousands of dollars she has spent on other people's engagements, weddings and baby showers, the normally ebullient Carrie starts to seethe."If you are single, after graduation there isn't one occasion where people celebrate you," she cries. "Hallmark doesn't make a 'congratulations, you didn't marry the wrong guy' card. And where's the flatware for going on vacation alone?"'The notion that singles are given short shrift has newfound significance these days. In Octob [...]

[2006-12-23] What does being 'separated' mean?
Some words have fairly simple definitions, such as "pomegranate," "widowed," or "evil-doers." But, when it comes to the world of dating, the term "separated" is far more complex, especially as interpreted differently by men and women. At the dating service I ran for 23 years, I heard a variety of uses for the word. It was not uncommon for a man to call inquiring about joining, stating that he was "separated" from his wife. His definition of the term, though, was that for the past three weeks, he and his wife of 15 years now slept in separate bedrooms down the hall from one another. Whe [...]

[2006-12-22] A Christmas Eve klatch
Rachel Davis summoned her klatch to Toscanini's in Central Square last week to help her make one of the most important decisions she will face this year -- what to wear to the Matzo Ball on Christmas Eve. "If I wear the red cocktail dress with the spaghetti straps, I'll look hot," the 26-year-old paralegal said to her three buddies. "But I don't want to send the wrong message. It's a fine line between hot and tramp, you know?" Davis confesses that she's feeling pressure to find just the right ensemble because Christmas Eve is perhaps the most important night of the year for the city's Jewish [...]
[2006-12-22] World in the Balance
The People Paradox (56 min) was aired on MPT (Annapolis, MD) on Dec. 21, 2006. We have lately heard a lot of concern about the lower reproduction rates in Europe and Japan, well below replacement rate. Russia will lose 20% of its population by 2050, and Japan’s rate is 1.3 children per family. More women have joined Japanese corporate culture, which is so demanding that families cannot afford the time to have children. There is also the problem of “parasite singles” who deny becoming “Christmas cakes” at 25. In Japanese culture, families, especially women, are expected to take care of their ag [...]

[2006-12-21] 12 Steps To Get Noticed And Get A Date Online
If you want to achieve success with online dating, you will need to educate yourself with the online dating scene. Online dating sites provide a service for people to meet but a dating site can only do so much of the work and input is required from you if you are serious about meeting a partner online. Whilst thousands of people are joining dating sites every day, hundreds are not making the most of the services a dating site has to offer. I’m no psychic but I’m pretty certain that someone who writes a dull or uninformative profile, doesn’t include a photo and makes no effort to contact anyon [...]
[2006-12-21] School puts brakes on speed dating venture
FLUSHING - Speed dating in the cafeteria? Why not, thought Flushing High School senior Jake Breczinski. He got the idea to run a speed-dating service at school after seeing it done in the movie "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." But administrators quickly shot it down before Breczinski could try out his teen matchmaking venture Monday. "I feel like there are a lot of kids in high school who don't know where to go or what to do when it comes to dating," said Breczinski, 18, who had been spreading the word about the free service all last week. "A lot of kids sit in the exact same spot in the lu [...]
[2006-12-21] The Lure of a Foreign Bride
Have you ever wondered why many single American men are now choosing to seek out foreign brides? I'm sure that you have and I'm sure that there are many questions rattling around in your head about the reasons behind this trend. It's simple really, the American women that men come into contact with today are to judgmental, they are to independent, they are to self absorbed and they immediately judge a man by his outward appearance without getting to know the real person inside. In our society we have allowed ourselves to be far removed from things such as humility, shame, family unity, res [...]
[2006-12-21] A study by a University of Virginia neuroscientist has revealed that happily married women who are feeling stress show recorded signs of immediate relief when they hold their husband’s hand, which brain scans could clearly identify.
Dr. James Coan, the leader of the limited study involving 16 couples in marriages judged to be strong, said he was taken aback by the effect this simple gesture had on the stress levels of the women. “We’ve known for decade that being in a good, committed relationship makes wounds heal faster, makes you sick less often and even live longer,” Coan said. “But the main point of this study is that no one had been able to quantify the mental benefits of a close relationship in terms of improved health.” Coan, whose study entitled “Lending a Hand: Social Regulation of the Neural Response to Threat [...]
[2006-12-21] Cafe Solstice: Place + Coffee = Love
It has been a year since Seattlest finished The Thesis. We're pretty proud of it. It gave us a chance to get out into the community, meet intriguing people, and listen to their stories. Aside from meeting our greasy research objectives, we learned about some great initiatives, saw great films, and sampled fine community places. We've gotten a lot of good mileage out of the work: conferences, projects, and relationships with many good people. But enough about us. We realized the upcoming anniversary as we were hanging out in one of the Ave's finest cafes, Cafe Solstice. We loved this place [...]

We need attractive conditions because they should come of their free own will. We are counting more on the people who used t [...]

[2006-12-21] Binge-drinking among women has doubled
The number of girls and young women drinking to excess has risen dramatically in a decade, NHS statistics released yesterday confirm. The figures chart the rise of the "ladette" culture, which emerged in the 1990s. In 1993 only nine per cent of women aged 16 to 24 drank more than 21 units of alcohol a week, according to the Health Survey for England trend tables from the NHS Information Centre. By 2002, this had leapt to 21 per cent. It is recommended that women have no more than two or three small drinks a day, amounting to between 14 and 21 units of alcohol a week. Regular d [...]
