Population of Russian Far East shrinking by almost 300 a day - envoy

Population decline was a key issue at the Security Council debate on security in the Russian Far East, Presidential Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Kamil Iskhakov told the press on Wedensday.

During the past 15 years, the population in the area has plummeted by 20% and is now shrinking at an average of 274 persons a day, he said.

"Programs inviting expatriate Russians to the Far East have been adopted but we expect only a small number of people from abroad. We need attractive conditions because they should come of their free own will. We are counting more on the people who used to live here," he said.

Illegal immigration from China is an acute problem for the region. While 150,000 immigrants arrive every year legally, the inflow of illegal immigrants is estimated at about 350,000, he said.
