[2006-08-17] Check background before diving into a relationship
“The only sure protection against fraud by someone you are involved with is to look deep into their past before they look deep into your eyes,” says Rhoda Cook, national coordinator for CUFF (Citizens United to Find Fugitives), a nonprofit company that deals with sweetheart fraud. When older singles venture into the dating world, most potential mates they meet are strangers. Before becoming romantically involved, singles need to protect themselves by learning as much about the stranger as possible. Barbara, like many older singles, was lonely, bored and looking for love. “I sent out those [...]
[2006-08-17] Identity Thief Finds Easy Money Hard to Resist
By TOM ZELLER Jr. By the time of Shiva Brent Sharma’s third arrest for identity theft, at the age of 20, he had taken in well over $150,000 in cash and merchandise in his brief career. After a certain point, investigators stopped counting. The biggest money was coming in at the end, postal inspectors said, after Mr. Sharma had figured out how to buy access to stolen credit card accounts online, change the cardholder information and reliably wire money to himself — sometimes using false identities for which he had created pristine driver’s licenses. But Mr. Sharma, now 22, says he nev [...]

According to an “Online Dating” report by JupiterResearch Analyst Nate Elliott, industry growth in the last twelve months has been driven by higher monthly fees rather than an increasing number of subscribers. Elliott said “...thirty seven percent of visitors who don’t convert say dating sites cost too much, making it thei [...]

[2006-08-17] Man wonders if dating attractive women is superficial and vain
By Kathy Mitchell and Marcy SugarSyndicated Columnists Dear Annie: I am a 36-year-old man who has never been in a serious relationship. The fault is all mine. I am shy and standoffish. Until recently, I preferred to stay home and watch TV instead of going out to socialize. I had some sort of epiphany about two months ago and have started going out a little more.I’ve had mixed results with the bar scene and joined a few online dating sites, but so far, most are filled with a bunch of superficial women searching for a Brad Pitt look-alike. I am reasonably attractive, but not a 10 by any means. [...]

Mistake #1: Sending her 'just' a wink Most internet dating sites let you send “winks” or “show interest” for free. But what does this say to her about you? Dear Annie: My husband and I have been married for three years, and I thought we had a very happy and passionate relationship. We are not young -- in our early 50s and both previously divorced. My husband and I share our home computer, and recently, I noticed he had left a dating service site open on the monitor. I discovered he has a profile on the site that says he is "single and looking." The picture he included was a shot I had recently taken in front of our home! Do I confront him about this? Is this some kind of male menopause thing? I don't want to start an argument, but it's ea [...]
