£30bn a year - that's the cost of loving in Britain

Date: 2006-08-17

LONELY Britons collectively spend £30bn a year looking for love, a study revealed.

Some £14.8bn is spent on the search for the perfect partner with a further £15.2bn going on keeping the sparks of love alive, internet dating firm Parship said.

Its Cost of Love Index found Britain's 9m singletons are prepared to splash out more money than ever to find their perfect match - to the tune of £1,650 a year.

More than £1,008 goes on nights out "on the pull", with another £156 spent on dating services and £602 going on an average of seven first dates each year.

But the cost of a first date has also got cheaper, down to £69 from £87 in 2005.

And once singletons have met that special someone they are prepared to spend freely to impress their partner.

Men splash out an average of £1,426 compared with £740 spent by women in the first six months of a relationship.

Wining and dining accounts for £970, with presents costing £148 and a further £184 spent on trips away.

Old-fashioned treats such as flowers and chocolates also set men back £63 with the same amount going on taxis.

But as the relationship continues past the 12-month barrier, men tone their spending down to £987 while women become more generous, shelling out an average of £784.

The survey also found breaking up sets broken-hearted couples back by £5bn.

Some 38% of women and 47% of men said they have lost CDs, TV sets, clothing, mobile phones, toiletries, pets, jewellery and even cars after splitting up with their partner
