The Mumbai Police’s main focus for the coming New Year’s celebrations is to prevent incidents of molestation and eve-teasing at open spaces in the city where large crowds are expected to gather. In a plan drawn up by the police, single males will be segregated from women at such spots.
“We intend to segregate single males from women and girls at these spots. This is not an easy task, but we will put up barricades to ensure that single males are restricted to one side, and women accompanied by males or single women will segregated to another section. This will prevent incidents like eve-teasing and molestation. Our main focus would be to ensure the safety of women during the New Year celebrations,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), K L Prasad.
On December 31 last year, a city tabloid had taken photographs of a crowd of men groping at a young woman and tearing off part of her clothes at the Gateway of India.
“These arrangements will be put in place at Gateway of India, and the beaches at Girgaum, Dadar and Juhu. We want to ensure that incidents like the one that took place at Gateway of India last year are not repeated,” said Prasad.
According to Prasad, lighting at these spots will also be increased, and people carrying bottles will be checked to see if they are carrying alcohol to consume it in public spaces.
“We are also keeping a tab on rave parties that might be arranged, and the Crime Branch will be working on this as well. The traffic police have also made arrangements to prevent untoward incidents,” said Prasad.
