26-year-old Jordan Paul Gann allegedly poses as a wealthy doctor or real estate investor, coming up with fancy terms and forged paperwork to match his story. As soon as women earn his trust, police say he takes their money and runs.
Detectives have identified two victims in the Tampa area, including Meredith Gavin, who first met Gann in Tampa in 2003.
“We had gotten some appetizers, dinner, drinks. He forgot his credit card, but we paid the bill… and for the next four days, he hung out with us,” Gavin said.
She says Gann got her pregnant and estimates she and her friends spent a combined total of $1,000 on him. She has since started a website to spread the word.
Tampa Police say a second woman met Gann on Clearwater Beach earlier this year. They became friends, and soon, Gann asked to open a joint checking account. He promised to deposit $100,000 to help her pay off her debt. But first, he told her he needed $750 to open the account. She gave it to him.
The woman became suspicious one day when Gann offered to drop her off at a movie theatre at Channelside in Tampa. During that time, he told her he would be going to the West Shore area to supposedly meet with another doctor.
She said she wanted to come with him instead of going to the movies alone. As they argued in a car in the West Shore Mall parking lot, the woman told detectives Gann got out of the car and walked off.
She never heard from him again.
In 2004, Gann served time for conning two Fort Walton Beach women out of $3,500. He was released in 2006.
Police say he has several aliases, including Simon Wilkes and Dr. Shawn P. Cohen.
“He’s very smooth as far as his approach. He’s very credible when he talks about being a doctor because apparently he has some knowledge in it,” said Tampa Police Detective Curtis Smith.
Gann allegedly impressed women by using lots of medical terminology, probably by researching online, Smith said.
He added that he has yet to find proof that Gann has any sort of medical degree.
Smith says Gann also claimed to be a real estate investor and a multi-billionaire. Apparently, he went to various real estate companies and asked to look at high-dollar properties. Oftentimes, that requires paperwork and documentation. Police say Gann would keep that paperwork and use it to impress women.
Gann is originally from New Hampshire and was last seen at a real estate office on Kennedy Blvd. in Tampa in September.
Police are now looking for other potential victims and information on Gann’s whereabouts. If you have any information, call Tampa Police at 813-231-6130.
