They hosted a speed dating session exclusively for seniors ages 55 and up. Their pitch, "looking for companionship? Come try the newest way to meet people!"
"I was with my second wife for about 26 years, and then we divorced about two years ago and I have been alone ever since. I mean it is hard to get back into the dating game after you have been out for so long," Peter Griffith, a speed dater said.
Griffith recently moved to Colorado Springs from Florida and thought a night of speed dating at the Colorado Springs Senior Center would help him meet some new female friends.
"They told me at the desk that there was a shortage of men, so I thought who knows maybe I got a really good chance," Griffith said.
Seniors lined up in anticipation of what and who they might meet inside. One woman commented that it felt like seventh grade all over again.
"Everyone will have five minutes with each other and they will score their card on whether or not they would like to see that person again, it must be mutual on both sides," Mendy Putman, Center Director said.
The Senior Center said this is a first for them. They planned the night upon request. "Interaction is vital when you are aging, it is the one thing that keeps people getting up in the morning," Putman said.
As for Griffith and so many others just like him, they said companionship is what makes life worth living. "I think it is foolish not to come to this, unless you got plenty of life going on elsewhere," Griffith said.
The Senior Center said they had between 90 and 100 people sign up for the speed dating session and they hope to continue it in the future.
