New rules protect foreign brides

Date: 2007-07-31

FOLLOWING complaints of women being treated as cattle, guidelines have been laid down governing how matchmaking agencies should project the image of foreign brides.
.
The Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore (Asas) said the rules aimed to preserve the dignity of women and guard against their exploitation. It forbade agencies from ranking women for their physical attributes as if describing a product, or implying they are for sale.
.
Asas also expressed its concern about agencies suspected of having links with human trafficking rings outside Singapore.
.
Consumer protection chief Mr Seah Seng Choon, hailing the new rules, said there have been demeaning ads offering brides from countries in the region.
.
The Asas guidelines state that ads should not guarantee marriage, be restricted to the classified section in print publications, and cannot contain visuals.
.
Only dating agencies accredited with the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports are exempted.
