She appealed to the Punjab government to protect her and her two children and help her get divorce so that she could go back to her country. Polato Nargis alleged that she married Harminder Kumar in 2000 in Russia, where he was earlier working. He came back to India in 2004 and started a business, but often came to Russia. "He asked me to come to India and join business. And in 2006, after selling my entire property in Russia, I came here," she said, adding, "Harminder purchased a house in Chandigarh with my money and also used a huge amount in his business."
"While bringing me to Nawanshahr at my in-laws' house, he thrashed me badly. My in-laws also maltreated me and tried to kill me and my younger daughter Ajlina," she said.
"But somehow I managed to contact NRI Sabha, which helped me," she added.
She alleged that her and her daughters' passports and her marriage certificate were lying with Harminder.
The DC has marked an inquiry to the police and DSP Dilbag Singh Pannu is investigating the case.
However, Harminder said Polato was not a Russian but an Uzbek and all allegations against him were baseless, as he never re-married. He added that he was ready to take the responsibility of his wife and daughters.
