Groom and girlfriend face deportation if convicte

Date: 2007-05-23

Authorities contend the marriage of Tori Crowther and Gassan Hassan Said was not a match made in heaven.
Instead, they claim that the December wedding was a scam designed to keep the Venezuelan groom in the country - and that the arrangements were made by Said's girlfriend, Eva Daisy Aguilar, a wedding planner.
On Wednesday, Said, 36, and Aguilar, 51 - who goes by Daisy - were indicted by a federal grand jury in Salt Lake City on a charge of aiding and abetting marriage fraud. At an initial court appearance on Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Samuel Alba ordered the two detained pending trial.
A tip last month to the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force led to the discovery of the sham nuptials, according to a statement in the indictment. The tipster said the 26-year-old Crowther had entered her marriage for immigration purposes when she already was in a relationship with Edwin Aguilar, Daisy's son.
Investigators were especially suspicious when they discovered that Daisy Aguilar had been convicted in 2001 of setting up a fake marriage between a U.S. citizen and an undocumented immigrant from Mexico.
Task force members first interviewed Said, who allegedly gave the wrong birth date of his bride and the name of a nonexistent telemarketing firm as her workplace.
The groom also said he and Crowther lived in a Kearns home with Daisy and Edwin Aguilar, with the newlyweds sharing one room and mother and son sharing another. However, task force members Gregory Rogers and Greg Knapp reported seeing a photograph of Said and Daisy Aguilar in a romantic pose prominently displayed in the entryway of the residence.
When questioned about the picture, Said allegedly insisted that he and Daisy are good friends but had no physical relationship and that his marriage was legitimate.
Crowther's story was different, according to the indictment.
She allegedly told the investigators she had been dating Edwin Aguilar for about five years and that Daisy asked her last year to marry Said to help him clear up "trouble at work." In return, Crowther would get a free place to live and insurance coverage through Said so she could obtain insulin to treat her diabetes, as well as a car and $150 a month to offset the loss of food stamps due to the marriage.
Crowther said the marriage was never consummated and that she lives alone in a basement bedroom in the house in Kearns, the indictment says.
In addition to facing possible prison time, Daisy Aguilar and Said could be deported. Prosecutors say Said entered the United States in February 2004 with a 30-day visitor visa and stayed illegally in the country after the time period expired.
And authorities began deportation proceedings in 2001 against Daisy Aguilar, a legal resident and native of El Salvador, on the basis of her marriage fraud conviction by a federal jury.
However, the immigration case was closed while Aguilar was appealing her fraud conviction and 11-month prison sentence. The matter fell through the cracks and was never revived after the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the appeal in 2003.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed holds on Aguilar and Said and plans to deport them after the marriage fraud case concludes.
