A story is normally told from the beginning, but I'm going to start from the end.
Before leaving the sexy singles Schnitzel event Thursday night, I got into a debate with a fellow named Rob. He thought I should be extremely subtle about calling a singles event, a singles event, because it may embarrass people who are single, and discourage them from coming out because they'll feel like a loser - cuz they're single.
He made it sound like being single is like having some incurable disease, even though he assured me he's very comfortable with his status.
But I still had to classify this event.
For instance, if you like sports, you're going to attend a sporting event. If you're single, you'll attend single events, and so on.
Why be embarrassed about being single? You know people constantly find something to complain about. People complain about there not being any single events, and then when there are, people are afraid somebody is going to find out that they're "single."
A couple of single 22-year-old dudes came in to check out the scene at Schnitzel's.
"I wanna meet some chicks, and if I find a girlfriend out of it, that's cool," said Chris.
Everyone at last night's event preferred to have their last name's withheld because of the stigma attached to attending a singles event.
All in all, most single people who joined me last night at this fabulous event expressed a lot of discouragement with the dating scene in Cornwall.
Some have been single for a very long time.
Here's what some of the men had to say.
"It's hard to meet people, especially if you don't like bars," said 46 year-old Dan.
"The single scene here is sad, not enough professionals," said 36-year-old-business owner Todd.
Eligible 30-year-old Jamie says the dating scene is tough in Cornwall.
"Can't find the right place to meet people," said Jamie.
The women are equally discouraged.
Twenty-nine-year-old Lynn said she's been single "forever."
Successful Karla said she's been single for six years, and is having a difficult time meeting a really great guy.
People came to Schnitzel's with the hopes of tingling while mingling (T&M), and while there was not a whole of T&M, the general consensus was it wasn't bad for a first, and they look forward to the next singles event.
Oh no I said that word again!
I think we should say it all together - SINGLE!!!! Yeahhhhh!
I'm planning another event in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know where and when in the next column.
