Two local residents want to help area singles bring a little more love into their lives with a new matchmaking business.

Date: 2007-04-20

For Rob Carleton and Lisa Cook, the idea to start a local matchmaking service evolved out of a speed-dating event they helped run in Gravenhurst.

After seeing the interest that successful event sparked, Carleton and Cook felt there was a demand in the area for ways for singles to meet potential mates, and the idea for Jack and Jill Matchmaking began to form.

"I said to Lisa, 'We should start this,'" said Carleton.

Although the speed-dating event served as the catalyst for the two roommates to venture into playing cupid, it wasn't Carleton's first experience with the business of matchmaking.

Several years ago, while living in Toronto, Carleton's landlady was also a matchmaker, and he remembers how busy the occupation kept her.Once he and Cook, who have also successfully set each other up in relationships, decided to go ahead with their new business venture, Carleton went back to talk with his former landlady about the ins and outs that come with helping people find that special someone.

Further research on the Internet revealed in the region they are hoping to target - from Barrie to Huntsville and surrounding areas - there are around 6,500 people looking for mates.

With a variety of Internet dating sites to choose from, Carleton said he and Cook want to offer a more personalized service.

"With the Internet, you don't know who it is you're talking to," he said, noting he knows several people who have tried meeting someone online with no luck.

What Jack and Jill offers is a chance for people to be matched with other singles who share similar interests, goals and values, all determined through an in-depth interview process.

Carleton said the comfort of clients will be a key component to making their business successful, as well as offering the personal touch he and Cook think will differentiate it from other services.

"Our personalities reflect each other well, and people feel comfortable talking to us," he said. "I'm a people person, and so is Lisa."

Along with the interview used to determine what their client is hoping to find, Carleton said Jack and Jill allows clients to make a video so possible matches get a chance to see and hear them.

Although just getting started, the matchmaking service has already attracted several clients, and Carleton said calls continue to come in from people who want to find out more.

As the business grows, so will the database of clients who can be matched, and Carleton said he expects he and Cook will be able to start introducing clients to potential mates after a few months.

Along with the satisfaction of making it easier for local singles to form meaningful relationships, there's an element of personal satisfaction, as well.

"Matching up people feels just great," said Carleton.
