A growing number of divorced middle-aged men are marrying women from foreign countries. According to a study, men who have at least one failed marriage consider marrying younger women from outside of Korea, usually from Southeast Asia.

Chun Dae-young, CEO of the international marriage agency Arirang World, said that the number of people asking for information on bicultural marriages has doubled to 20-30 cases per month compared to the figure at the end of last year.

This time, it's not the men from rural areas looking for foreign wives, but men who reside in cities and who are financially stable.

Last year, professional Baduk player Seo Bong-su, 51, married a Vietnamese woman who is 29 years younger than him. Seo had one failed marriage and stayed single for a long time until he met his Vietnamese bride _ the wedding took place in Vietnam and the couple now lives on the outskirts of Seoul.

``I was lonely. I thank my wife for accepting all the disadvantages of living in this strange country just because of me,'' he said.

Well-known comedian and actor Yoo Toong also revealed that he has married a Mongolian woman 29 years younger than him. The two have a son.

Usually men with economic ability and social status are more inclined to international marriages as they can secure their property and other rights by signing a prenuptial agreement, which is rare in Korea. Also many men dream of living in Southeast Asian countries after retirement, and think that their foreign wives can help their post-work life, a marriage agent said.

These days, when matchmaking companies take care of all the details, international marriages can be arranged quite easily.

According to matchmaking company Durimoa, 181 out of 489 clients in a survey answered that they had or were considering an international marriage. The main reasons men seek foreign brides include curiosity about a foreign culture, other peoples' recommendation and the reality that there is a shortage of suitable spouses in Korea.

The most favored spouses-to-be are Uzbeks, Mongolians, Vietnamese and Filipinos. ``They are beautiful, intelligent and very obedient to their husbands,'' Kim Sun-young, a matchmaker, said.

``Those marriages are win-win situations for it is difficult for men with children to find a spouse who can take care of the whole bundle and it is difficult for a woman to find a man who can support her and her family,'' Lee Young-ae of the international marriage agency Interwedding, said.

She cited the case of Lee Hee-seung, a government official who had three children with his ex-wife. It wasn't easy for him to find a wife who would take care of his three kids, but his young Vietnamese wife did so, and even went to a nearby factory to make some extra income.

``I can say these marriages go well because husbands feel thankful to their wives for their sacrifice and women feel grateful for the money their husband sends to their mother country,'' she said. Usually the amount of money sent is relatively small _ around 100,000 won.

However, not everybody is dreaming of an international marriage. An agent of Durimoa said that some men, after exploring the idea of international marriage, find it impractical.

``We talk for quite a long time with some customers and then they finally say that it still sounds better to marry a Korean,'' she said, warning that marriage out of simple curiosity can result in another unhappy marriage.
