With so many people working late and being tired of the bar scene, the internet is becoming a more and more popular way to meet someone. So, today's Love Check-Up focuses on on-line dating.
Here are the thoughts of two local singles.
"I call it the good the bad and the ugly," says Regina Sooey, a busy real estate agent.
For Jay Magee, a busy public relations specialist for Community Hospice, "I've done that on and off, and it's more misses than hits for me."
Although, Regina and Jay both have had their share of bad dates from dating sites, they do like the convenience of it. And, they have learned how to avoid some of the traps when making an on-line profile or checking out others.
Jay says, " The way I see it, you want people to know who you are. So, they are getting the truest snapshot. So, you can avoid the gotcha later. Like "Oh, that picture is from ten years ago."
Regina says, "I think it's important to be yourself, and be honest and stick to who you truly are. Because if you put on a good profile and try to change the way you act, they are going to find out anyway."
According to Regina, it's easy for someone to write pretty much whatever they want, and they could be lying so you need to be careful.
She offers this advice, "Never let them pick you up. Don't let them know where you live."
And, when you do agree to meet that person, Regina has a great plan to help you get out of a bad situation, if necessary.
She says, "Coffee or lunch is best. It's in a public place and you can leave quicker., I give them a time limit at first, so I have an easy out. If I'm not having fun, I can just say, 'Oh, I've got to leave for my appointment' and that makes it easier," says Regina.
There are some local dating sites for people who want to find someone locally, like JAXsingles.com and JAXDates.com.
I tried to contact these sites to get some advice for on-line daters, but I was told by both, that they could not provide anyone for me to interview, because ironically, they are not based in Jacksonville.
