Vera Wang went half a world and an entire century away seeking inspiration for her fall collection. The designer mixed a simple neutral palette and spare shapes with diamond embroidery and military insignias in her show yesterday afternoon. Some was meant to evoke the Romanoff court; some the Russian Bolshevik worker.Boston-born designer Joseph Abboud found himself on the other side of the runway yesterday, sitting second row at Badgley Mischka’s show. Invited to view the beaded lame dresses and furs by his spinning buddy Kristen Scott, Abboud said he rarely gets into New York City anymore. He’s built an office near his home in Bedford, N.Y., where he is strategizing his future. Having sold his company two years ago, he must abide by his noncompete clause and wait until July to begin designing again.“The countdown’s on,” he said.In the meantime, the 56-year-old avid Red Sox fan is awaiting spring training and debating whether to build a home on some land he has in western Massachusetts. He will also appear on “Martha Stewart Living” Feb. 16.
TOUR DISSES BOSTON
IMG, the company that produces Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, has decided to take the show on the road. But not to Boston. When Fashion Week Live visits four major cities next month - Houston, Dallas, San Francisco and Chicago - audiences will get a live runway show sampling some of the clothes designers just showed this week. Supermodels Naomi Campbell and Gemma Ward will be among the models strutting the catwalk.I was insulted that Boston was overlooked, so I went to the Web site for some answers. The ridiculous ticket prices explained everything. No intelligent Hub woman would drop $500 - and that’s only for the gold-level package - to see this show. And the chance of getting any self-respecting socialite to pony up $1,500 for the diamond package - for a “platinum giftbag,” after-party and front-row seat - seems unlikely.Women who can afford this can probably afford the designers’ clothes. Which means they could score invites to the real shows if they wanted.
