If your weekend plans include hanging out with friends at a restaurant or bar in hopes of meeting someone new to date, consider this: Maybe you would be better off going to the grocery store together. This morning we shared some of the unusual places people say they meet single men and women.
For some reason, the grocery store keeps topping the list. I scoured lots of different Web sites about dating and many of them named the grocery store as a place to strike up a conversation with single men and women.
One article even had a strategy for navigating the aisles. I'm not kidding. The Web site GetRomantic.com said there are much better approaches than just bumping carts. They suggest making the most of waiting in line at the check-out counter. Use that time to strike up a conversation.
The produce section is apparently the hot spot for introducing yourself to someone. Apparently the question to ask is this: "What is the best way to pick one of these?" The folks at GetRomantic.com said people love being asked for expert advice.
There is also timing advice. Don't just show up at the grocery store at any old time. You have to plan. Go early in the evening after work. That's when a lot of single people shop, apparently. Or go on a Saturday in the late morning or early afternoon, when it is crowded in general.
Apparently home improvement stores like Home Depot, Menards and Lowe's are feeling the love as well. The folks at iVillage.com said that their message boards about dating are full of stories about women meeting available guys while they are roaming the aisles in search of tools. Home Depot even offers classes, which can be an excellent setting for getting to know someone new.
Not all men and women are handy. Some are bookworms, so what better place to have a meaningful conversation about a new book than a bookstore? There's a reason so many single people are wandering the aisles with their glasses on. They are not just looking for titles.
Other Web sites list places like church or temple, health clubs, museums, coffee houses and animal shelters as locations to meet someone with similar interests as yours. The Laundromat also came up quite a few times.
And if you are athletic, consider signing up for a community softball team or a running club. I think the point that dating specialists are trying to get across is that you have many more options than bars or nightclubs, if you are sincerely interested in meeting someone new to date.
