According to US News & World Report, 40 million single Americans check out online dating sites every year. Lots of them have found true love, but how do you write the perfect personal that stands out from the rest?
Just log on to any Internet dating site and you will find lots of people looking for love online. If you want to make sure your personal ad is an attention getter, it has to have that "wow" factor.
Steven Ward of Master Matchmakers is an expert at helping people make the right connection. He says, "An online profile is no different than a ‘for sale’ sign in front of a house. You're just letting people know you're available so you need to promote yourself."Ward says skip the clichés and be positive. Don't talk about negative experiences. "My suggestion is to keep it short and sweet. Leave an air of mystery. Leave the person curious and wanting to know more," says Ward.
And let your headline reflect something about you. If you're smart, be intellectual. If you're funny, be funny. Like "I'm unlike anyone you've ever met before, just give me a chance" or "beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I promise you won't be disappointed."
27-year old Jennifer Kelly’s headline was "Sassy Single." Her headline, the fact that she liked sports and her picture got 28-year old Tim Leisner's attention.
Leisner says, "She had a tiara on and she looked like she was having a great time and I thought this girl looks pretty fun."
Jennifer really liked that Tim was tall because she's tall, but she says what came through his ad the most was that Tim seemed like a nice guy and in fact, he was.
Kelly says, "I just knew. I didn't know exactly what it was, but I knew this was different. I knew he was different."
And he was also the right guy. After meeting on yahoo 2 1/2 years ago, Jen and Tim are getting married, which Tim says he never expected.
He says, "Not in a million years. I just thought I’d try it and see if it works."
Obviously, it did. The wedding is set for March 24th.
