41.34% of Ukrainians believe that close integration with Russia gives an opportunity to Ukraine to work freely in Russia; 21.55% see Ukraine partially losing its independence in this action. These are results of a poll conducted Gorshenin Institute of Governance Issues (Kiev) released on January 16, a REGNUM correspondent in Kiev reports.
Meanwhile, 12.41% of the respondent expressed confidence that close integration with Russia will serve as guaranteed security to Ukraine from a military aggression; 12.96% say that such cooperation envisages Russian military bases in Ukraine; 10.5% predict participation of Ukrainian troops in military operations with Russia in case if such integration takes place; 20.54% say living standards of the population will increase; 34.81% hope that energy prices will decrease; 10.7% hope for better social protection. Answering a question in what form the integration can take place, 62% of the respondents say that visa-free regime for citizens of both countries is an effective measure of integration; 35.59% speak for free movement of goods and services; 31.73% support cultural exchange as an effective way, 10.44% single currency, 5.72% single army, 4.12% single legislation, 13.10% single foreign policy, 3.41% common governmental institutions. At the same time, 9.64% of Ukrainians are sure that the integration is pointless; 10.39% found it difficult to answer.
The survey was held from December 14 to 28, 2006, in 14 Ukrainian regions. Overall, 2,012 respondents were questioned under route sampling taking into account social and demographic characteristics of the Ukrainian population aged over 18. Statistical error is not over 2.4%.
