Head of the Moscow police department Vladimir Pronin said at a meeting of the city government on Tuesday that over 25,000 of all crimes in the Russian capital are committed by newcomers. According to the official, the number of crimes with the use of firearms by non-residents has increased by one-third as compared with previous years, number of crimes committed under the influence of drugs by 22 percent, and by 10.5 percent - crimes linked with fraud, theft and robbery. “The share of criminals migrants that have no stable income source has reached 70 percent,” Pronin specified adding that “illegal migrants are enslaved by their more successful fellow countrymen and often find themselves in the street penniless and have no other way out than committing crimes.” The city police department chief said that at present over 66,000 people coming from the North Caucasus and Trans-Caucasus region are registered in the Russian capital. “In actual fact, this figure is considerably bigger,” said Pronin adding that there are 200,000 migrants from Central Asia – Tajikistan and Uzbekistan registered in the city and 60,000 – from China and Vietnam. “The real figure exceeds these data more than two times,” the police official pointed out. In the view of Pronin, it is necessary to carry out educatory work in secondary and vocational training schools in order to prevent manifestations of racial and ethnic intolerance, reduce the number of unemployed among the native population, rule out the coverage by the media of household crimes as ethnic ones, as well as toughen requirements to employers in the sphere of the use of migrant labour force
