Prospective Malaysian bridegrooms here have been urged to refrain from getting hitched with illegal immigrants in order to prevent problems that might arise from such alliance.
Elopura Assemblyman Au Kam Wah said even the national policy also discourages such nuptials.
He said marrying an illegal immigrant is tantamount to harbouring and hence would be dealt with accordingly.
According to him, several concerned parents had expressed their grievances to him after a statement he made pertaining to children with birth certificate marked "Daftar Orang Asing" (foreigners' registrar).
Children under this category are barred from enrolling into government schools.
Au, who is SAPP central youth chief, however, said those who still wish to carry on with their intention to strike a union with a foreigner must go through the proper channel by legalising their wedding.
"Otherwise, they will end up with Daftar Orang Asing status on their birth certificate," he said.
He said foreign brides who got pregnant before filing their marriage registration would also face the same consequence since the National Registration Department (NRD) is monitoring the situation very closely.
"The negligence of such couple would only lead to hardship in the future, including the schooling of their children," he said.
Nevertheless, Au said he would liase with the NRD to help those facing the problem.
He said a dialogue would also be organised in the near future to explain to the affected parents as well as to provide necessary assistance to them.
