Hide your love away

Date: 2006-12-26

Some hide it, others flaunt it. Celebrity relationships have always kept the world wondering whether they are for real or not.

When Aishwarya Rai was spotted performing special pujas with the Bachchans at Varanasi, speculations were rife about an impending marriage between the beauty queen and the son of Bollywood's first family. The elusive nature of their relationship only added to the fun.

While Hollywood has had its share of contemplation with elusive star couples, our desi stars too don't talk beyond being 'just good friends'. Actor Parvin Dabas, who has been linked to actress Preeti Jhangiani, says, "My personal life is just for me, and I don't like to talk about it. Moreover, splashing it in public would only result in controversies."

But doesn't gossip about private life garner more publicity for the celebrity in question? "I would rather let my work speak for myself than use linkups as opportunities," reasons Parvin.

A few like Ayesha Takia and Kareena Kapoor have preferred to be honest about their relationships. Actress Perizaad Zorabian, who got married (no, not a celebrity marriage, this one) says, "I've always been honest about my relationship but my spouse is a very private person and not comfortable with the glare.

When both people in a relationship are in a glamourous profession and decide to be open about their lives, it's their choice. But otherwise it's horrible to open one's life to the world. One needs to project a certain kind of image all the time and that may put a lot of unnecessary pressure on the relationship."

While celebrities have accepted linkups as a part of stardom, they do fear the gossip. Television actress Muskaan Mihani, who has been linked to her co-star in a soap, feels disturbed. "Link ups are common but they affect me personally. More so because I come from a conservative family. When I'd be seeing someone, I'll announce it from the roof top. Why hide a happy occasion?" she asks.

Be it any industry — rumour mills seem to be happily working overtime when it comes to hidden romances. Supermodel Fleur Xavier, says, "The private lives of celebrities are constantly under the public eye. I would not keep my relationship a secret but would keep unnecessary people out of it."

Call it curiosity or a penchant for gossip, the romantic lives of celebrities are indeed a source of entertainment for people. And bigger the star, greater the interest.
