Dating in the fast line

Date: 2006-12-14

Four men made the trek to O'Charley's restaurant last Monday for the city's first Cupid.com-sponsored speed dating event.
Ten women, dressed in business attire or going-out outfits, waited patiently. Each man and woman paired up and spent six minutes getting to know one another.

Women who waited for their turn ate appetizers, had a drink from the bar or chatted amongst themselves. Even if they didn't find a man that evening, they were content to make new friends.

Organizer Vivian Baldwin said the event was a success.

"I was very excited and proud to be the host," she said. "Although everyone registered was not in attendance it was still a nice amount."

Touted as a way for busy singles to meet and mingle, these "predating" events have been successful in Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, Greensboro and Chapel Hill.

Similar events hosted at the Officer's Club on Fort Bragg and various churches prove local singles may be weary of the bar scene and are open to new ways of meeting potential mates.

The concept is pretty simple: meet a lot of different people and hope that one or more of them are compatible matches.

Each woman was assigned a table and after time was up, the men would rotate to a new table.

Meet the men
Juan, a defense lawyer living in Raleigh but originally from Chattanooga, TN. He occasionally works at the Cumberland County Courthouse and takes on some of the court-appointed cases.

Matt, a newspaper reporter who writes about city government. He's lived in the state his whole life and has a tattoo of UNC's mascot, Rameses, on his forearm. After his 15-year marriage ended, he is looking to get back in the dating scene.

Kevin, 42, an upstate New York transplant searching for a new career in Cameron. He lived in Seattle and once worked for Boeing. This was his first time at a speed dating event.
"Online, you see a picture of them and some of it may not be real," Kevin said of his experience with alternative dating methods.

And Charles, a retired Special Forces soldier looking to brush up on his Russian language skills. He spent time in eastern Russia while in the military and has a gold ring that pays homage to his time in the 82nd Airborne Division.

Baldwin rang a silver bell with a heart-shaped handle to signal six minutes were over.

Meet the ladies
Tracey, a police sergeant in Fayetteville, who came with a female friend, also from the police department.

A blonde woman at Table 4 jotted notes on the back of her pink instruction sheet to keep busy.

A woman in her 30s with slick dark hair parted in the middle and flipped inward at Table 6. She wore a white jacket, red shirt and dark jeans.

There was another Tracey and a Teresa, and facilitators Vivian and Natalie.

Some had teenaged children and some were divorced. Only one of the men had not been married.

Matt said six minutes was not enough time to get to know more about an interesting woman but when no chemistry could be found with a particular woman, those six minutes dragged on.

Overall, the participants were pleased and said they would attend again.

Prior to the event , Baldwin had 10 women and seven men signed up through the dating website. Preregistered women ranged in age from 25 to 53 and the men, 24 to 51.

Baldwin had requests that future groups be divided by age ranges, lifestyles and ethnicity and said singles from surrounding areas are welcome to participate in Fayetteville events.

"As long as people are single and open to the option of speed dating then I will continue to host events," she said.

Almost a hundred years ago, Sigmund Freud famously asked, “What do women want?” In political terms, the answer is unmistakable: What women want is a woman president. And their voting preferences are showing how strongly they feel. According to the Gallup Poll of November 9-12, both Democratic and Republican women disproportionately support their party’s potential female candidates.
