BAN ON ASIAN TEEN BRIDES

Date: 2006-11-30

MINISTERS are set to ban teenage brides entering Britain after arranged marriages.

The controversial move is being discussed at the highest government level, The People can reveal.

It means the age a foreign spouse will be allowed into Britain would be raised to 21.

Tackling the heartache of arranged marriages is the next target for the Government after Commons leader Jack Straw provoked Muslim uproar for saying veiled women stopped integration.

Ministers believe that as many as seven out of ten marriages in the Asian community are organised by parents.

Three years a go the minimum age overseas wives and husbands could come to Britain was raised from 16 to 18.

One minister said: "It makes total sense. You're much better equipped to integrate into the UK at 21 than as a teenager. It's better for them and it's better for Britain. We whing when people come in and pursue their own cultures but then do nothing to help them."

The Government is looking at immigration systems in the US, Canada and Australia to see what can be learned.

The minister added: "They are all tough on immigration but kind to immigrants when they get there."

Asian blogs are full of the pain of arranged matches. And UK-born Muslim girls call them "deranged marriages".

Raising entry age was first proposed by Keighley Labour MP Ann Cryer. She said: "The 21 limit allows the girl space for maturity and to complete higher education."

Another proposal is to provide every foreigner settling here with their own designated welfare officer. They would show them where to learn English and how to find work.
