Online dating becomes popular for students

Date: 2006-11-30

Living the single life can make online dating websites very appealing because of their enormous and still growing popularity.

Living the single life can make online dating websites very appealing because of their enormous and still growing popularity.

Forty-four percent of adult Americans are single, according to U.S. Census figures. This means there are more than 100 million unattached people out there, according to http://msn.match.com. Out of those, 40 million Americans have used an online dating service, which is about 40 percent of the entire U.S. single-people pool.

According to a January 2006 report from Media Metrix, the top five online dating sites measured by unique at-home, at-work and university visitors for December 2005 were: Yahoo! Personals, which had 24,041 visitors; Match.com, which had 3,604 visitors; Spark Networks with 2,832 visitors; True.com with 1,956 visitors; and Mate1.com which had 1,782 visitors.

Fees for such sites range from $10-50 per month.

Online dating sites such as those mentioned above could be threatened by the rising popularity of free social networking sites. While not specifically online dating sites, places like MySpace and Friendster offer online dating as one of their social networking features.

January 2006 data from Media Metrix ranks the most popular social networking sites measured by unique at-home, at-work and university visitors for December 2005, which are: MySpace.com with 32,309 visitors; Facebook.com, which had 12,414 visitors; Xanga.com which had 8,716 visitors; Hi5.com with 3,073 visitors; and Myyearbook.com with 2,422 visitors.

Online dating is popular through a number of websites and with millions of Americans, including some college students.

Senior Kimberly Spencer, an elementary education major from La Verkin, said: “In some ways I think online dating is popular [among college students] because there are a lot of college students who want to get married and meet others.”

Krysti Webster, a sophomore nursing major from Brookside, tried online dating with ldssingles.com. She said it introduced her to a lot of new people and opportunities.

“Computers seem to be an appendage nowadays, especially for college students,” Webster said. “The tendency is to sit at home and play around online.”

While online dating might be an option for some, others disagree.

“I wouldn’t try online dating because there are so many strange people around,” Spencer said. “If I started dating someone, I would want to meet them in person.”

Spencer said she has had a variety of friends who have done online dating and there are even a couple who have gotten married because of it. Webster has also had friends get married after meeting online.

“[I had a friend meet someone] on matchmaker.com,” Webster said. “They talked for two weeks, met and got married three months later. Another friend met someone on ldssingles.com and they talked for a while. Three months later, they met and fell in love. A month later they were married.”

At the end of November 2004, there were 844 lifestyle and dating sites, a 38 percent increase since the start of the year, according to Hitwise Inc. According to a 2002 Wired magazine article forecast, “20 years from [2002] the idea that someone looking for love without looking for it online will be silly.”

Although online dating is a good way to meet people, safety is an important part of venturing into the online dating world. According to www.onlinedatingmagazine.com, there are several things that can be done to be safe when meeting someone through online dating.

First of all, when meeting for the first time, never allow your date to pick you up from your home. For a first meeting, always meet in a public place where other people are in close proximity. You may also want to consider going out with a group of people or double date.

The biggest threat to a person's judgment, when on a date, is alcohol. Not only does it affect your judgment, but alcohol also lessens your inhibitions. If you are drinking, keep your drink in sight at all times and don’t get so drunk that you don’t know what you are doing.

Provide your own transportation to your public meeting place, and make sure you have more than enough gas. If you want to see your date again, arrange a second date and then take it from there.

It's important never to let your guard down when on a first date. Never assume someone is safe. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. And if you haven’t met this person before, and you know at the beginning of the date that something doesn’t feel right, leave immediately.

Be sure someone knows where you are going and who you'll be with. You might even consider arranging a time to call and check in, or you could arrange to meet up with friends later that night. Even if you’re having a blast and the chemistry is great, it’s a good idea to remain alert the whole evening. Make sure you have a cell phone on you.
