Online dating has become sort of a trend in this day and age. Sites like Match.com are marketing their ‘find love guarantee’ and they even have paired up with Dr. Phil in order to further assist their customers.
But there are things that you need to be aware of when searching for love or friendship online. There have been many instances where a person has been scammed on an online dating site for money.
What is an online dating scam? An online dating scam is when someone creates a false personal profile on a dating website, and tries to use another person for money. Many times the person’s profile will include the typical “seeking romance” or “looking for a soul mate.” Like anyone else, a scammer can sign up for these websites with little or no charge. Some online dating services don’t screen their applicants, which can be dangerous. These ‘scammers’ take advantage of the anonymous part of the internet and use it to lure in potential victims.
Signs that it’s a scam: The scammer will get to know you, and eventually begin to ask you for money. Maybe not directly but they will ask for financial help in a number of areas. They may ask you to wire them the money, so they do not have to meet you. They won’t give you an address, just a PO Box; their other contact information (cell phone) does not seem legit. The most common line that scammers use to ask for money is “I want to meet you but I don't have enough money to travel to see you.” They also use a number of other lines, so be skeptical!!
What can I do to protect myself from these scams? Use a reputable online dating services and read their privacy statement and if they scan their applicants. Also follow the basic safety tips for online dating and be skeptical. Never give money to someone you don’t know and when meeting someone meet in an open, public place with people you know.
