The United States is making it more difficult for men to bring so-called mail-order brides into the country.
The New York Times said the federal immigration service has frozen 10,000 visa applications for foreign fiancees because they did not conform with the new International Marriage Broker Regulation Act.
The law, known as Imbra, is intended to give foreign women and the U.S. government more information about the men who seek foreign brides.
Supporters of the law say they aren`t trying to stop marriages between American men and foreign women, but say the women should be informed about what they are getting into.
Immigration officials say 37,500 women entered the country last year on fiancée visas, up 50 percent from 2002.
Dating agencies that match American men with foreign women must provide women with information about a man`s criminal record and marital history and get her consent before disclosing her contact information, the newspaper said.
