Beer in hand, bedecked in Western bling, Tammy Gray steadied her nerves before diving back into the dating scene.

Gray and 12 other people spent about an hour and half on a recent weeknight breaking the ice at a speed dating event at Caliente Mexican restaurant in downtown Shreveport. Speed dating, in which people chat for a few minutes to see if a spark develops, debuted in 1997.
