Four-part harmonies, dazzling choreography, and a surprise ending are in store for audience members who attend the annual Mid-Lakes Chorus of Sweet Adelines show on Saturday at Comstock Community Auditorium. This year's program has been titled ``www.CutRateDate.com `Searching Cyberspace for the Perfect Guy'.''
The self-produced show is a musical of sorts, featuring an original script and with songs performed by the more the 50-member women's chorus from Allegan, Barry and Kalamazoo counties. It has everyone working on the show cracking up in laughter.
``It took three weeks to put together, and then it evolved a little bit'' publicity chair Lois Snyder said. ``We are doing run-throughs of it now from beginning to end, and it just cracks the girls up. So we hope it amuses our audience as well as being impressed with the barbershop sound, our enthusiasm and excitement that we try and put into the show.''
The show features songs like ''It's Raining Men,'' ``Cabaret,'' ``I Feel A Song Coming On'' and ``Chattanooga Choo Choo'' chosen by Director Denise Van Dyken, who's been directing the group since 1982. All sung in barbershop style, the songs wrap around the story of a woman who's not married and whose friends are trying to get her hitched. She's been through date after date with men with which she has nothing in common.
One thing she's certain of is that she is not getting into the computer-dating scene. Except that there's one problem: Her friends have already created an online profile for her. The show then takes the audience with songs and dance through all the different people that contact her online, including a surprise ending that the chorus has been sworn to secrecy to keep under wraps.
``The secret ending to the show has been pledged to absolute silence,'' Snyder said. ``We can't even tell our husbands or significant others, our children, nobody.''
In the second half of the program, the chorus will sing more straight-style barbershop songs with a preview of the group's competition songs for the spring. Every year, choruses from Michigan, Indiana and Illinois meet at the Amway Grand in Grand Rapids to compete in a Sweet Adelines regional competition.
