Love in the fast lane

Date: 2006-09-21

ON your marks, get set, date.

Singles on the lookout for love will have minutes to find their perfect match next month when a speed dating night is held in Berwick.

Gone will be the sleazy pick-up lines and the need to give out false phone numbers. Instead people can meet potential partners in a safe and fun environment.

The dating flurry will give participants 10 minutes to make an impression and increase their chances of meeting that special someone.

Justine Knight and Robyn Dunn started their own speed dating company, the Savvy Express Dating Service, a year ago.

Since then they have held speed dating nights right across Victoria from Bendigo to Ballarat, and Sale to Traralgon, attracting up to 100 people each night.

On Friday, 6 October the speeding dating night will be held at the Berwick Springs Hotel in Clyde Road.

Ms Knight said the emphasis of the evening was to be yourself and have fun.

“It’s safe, fast and fun and gives you the opportunity to meet that special someone that we are all looking for,” she said.

Ms Knight said participants usually ranged from their 20s to 50s and were allocated into age groups before the evening started.

She said the company had plans to also expand their service to those in their more senior years to help older people make new friends or even meet a partner.

“With speed dating you meet lots more people that if you went to a pub and, say, only one or three of the 400 people there were single,” Ms Knight said.

“Here you can meet between six and 10 people and the odds are so much better. You might find your perfect match or strike up some new friendships. It is a bonus either way.”

Ms Knight said men were always a bit quicker to sign up for the speed dating nights, but the events usually ended up attracting an even number of men and women.

“Some people are incredibly nervous when they get there but they soon get over it and have a ball,” she said.

“Many people come back again if they don’t meet that perfect someone.”

The evening costs $40 and includes two complimentary drink vouchers and finger food.

Everyone is given a booklet on the night, where they can tick the names of any possible suitors that catch their eye.

If both people give each other the tick of approval they are declared a match and the next day the Savvy Express Dating Service will forward the respective contact details on to each person.

The evening starts at 7pm where people will meet their hosts and have the rules explained. Dating then starts at 7.30pm and there is a break during the evening to allow people to mingle and get to know each other better. The night finishes about 11pm.
