The Russian Embassy in Thailand Wednesday warned Russian tourists to follow "a sensible approach" toward travel to this Southeast Asian country.
The Thai military staged a successful coup Tuesday while Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was in New York attending the 61st session of the UN General Assembly.
"There is no imminent danger for Russian citizens, but one should use common sense when taking a decision to travel to Thailand, because the situation is unpredictable and people must decide for themselves whether to travel or not," said Irina Borisyuk, the embassy's spokesperson.
Borisyuk said there are about 5,000 vacationing Russian tourists in the country, both in the capital and at popular Thai resorts.
"The situation in Bangkok is normal, but we are still warning Russians who are in the city to be extremely cautious and to avoid visiting areas where government buildings and the king's palace are located," she said.
"Nobody can predict future developments," the spokesperson said. "But in any case, we have warned tour operators and airlines, and we are ready to coordinate our actions and provide assistance to tourists if the situation takes an unexpected turn."
Thailand is a popular vacation destination among Russians, with more than 100,000 Russian tourists visiting the country every year.
