Divorcee dating site proves a hit

Date: 2006-09-04

AS WE enter the third year of the Business Network page it's encouraging to know that most of those we have profiled are surviving and, in many cases, thriving.

Take Melinda Poole, for example. She reports that her separation advice site, i-dont.com.au, has "made a number of steps forward based on ideas we have created as well as the advice gained through the experts on your panel".

"Soon after the article was published we launched the new look and feel of the website that incorporated a change to the navigation and structure of our unique directory search functionality," Poole says. "This new approach made the site look and feel more professional to the visitor."

She says the site has continued to add more articles across a broader range of separation and divorce topics, and the links to other valuable government and community services have been extended.

"Many of these links have been gained on a reciprocal basis with similar interest," Poole says. "This was on the suggestion of Scott Lorson of Optus, who was part of your panel last year."

Poole says the most significant development in the past six months has been the introduction of an "Australian first" divorcee-to-divorcee dating service

"We knew from the feedback within our discussion forums that dating was a very important part of the process for people going through separation," she says.

"Discussions about dating or starting over were outnumbering other subject areas by three times. Since launching in January 2006 the dating service has continued to increase our hits to the site by more than twice the number we were achieving beforehand.

"We now have over 500 registered participants on the dating service and the male-to-female split is close to 50:50."

I-dont.com.au survives on advertiser subscriptions. Poole says "potential advertisers in this market space do not easily see the opportunity to get to this highly targeted market for as little as $9 per week - or less than one reasonable ad in one issue of their local newspaper".

Since February she has been sending her newsletter to registered email addresses, which has been popular.

"We have more than doubled our opt-in email addresses for our newsletter in just five issues," she says. "We see the newsletter as a very positive component of our business and we are always looking to advertisers to support the newsletter with special offers or giveaways."

Another of our favourite subjects, Jensen's Choice Foods, is continuing its admirable battle to keep alive Australia's declining food manufacturing base.

The Melbourne firm has just won a substantial export contract to supply its crushed ginger to a major US grocery store chain, Trader Joe's.

Delia Timms of Find A Babysitter says July was a record month. Revenue rose 29 per cent compared with June, due to higher subscriptions and better margins.

"On July 22 we rolled out some significant new features - job postings, my shortlist and my comments online - along with new membership options and slightly increased fees," she says. "Following the advice from the experts we are focusing on our online strategies and have just engaged some help with search engine optimisation and paid listings on search engines."
