Man 'delusional' during sex attack on teenage girl

A Sydney court has heard that a man who drugged and then sexually assaulted a teenage girl was suffering from a delusion at the time.

Arthur Fairwell, 39, has pleaded guilty to six charges including the aggravated sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.

The Sydney District Court has heard he met the girl's mother through a telephone dating agency and drugged both the mother and daughter when he went to their Bradfield home in Sydney's south-west in May 2004.

At a sentencing submission hearing today, Fairwell's lawyer argued that his client has a long history of mental health problems.

He said that there is evidence that at the time of the assault Fairwell was suffering from a delusion which he thought compelled him to have sex with the 13-year-old girl.

He said Fairwell's adult life had been made miserable by his mental illness.
