Safety is always on Julie Brush's mind when she finds a date online.
"I meet new people in a public place. And I often say, you know, I need to be home by a certain time."
Julie also uses a one of it's kind online security system. It's called securesingles.com. Here's how it works: first you create a personal profile that includes information about the people you agree to meet.
"They can upload emails that the person has sent, they can put in their photo, they can put in any personal or private information that they have on the individual," says Joe Tracy of Online Dating Magazine.
You also provide contact information for family and friends you want notified if a date goes bad. Then, before your night out, you write an alert. Attach your date's information and set up a time for the message to go out. If you don't cancel, the alert is sent via email, instant message or text message to your contacts.
"Normally, they have to go through and look on somebody's computer and try to figure out who the heck the person went out with. But your loved ones will have that information, and they can give it to the authorities," says Jill Marie Crosby with Securesingles.com
It's easy to cancel an alert. If you're home in time, you can turn it off on your computer or you can access the Secure Singles site via your mobile phone, so you can change your alerts while you're out.
This dating security site is the brainchild of some parents and single professionals who became alarmed by the dating disaster stories they heard. The service is free of charge.
