Lenin
Do you know the name of the man who turned the trend of Russian history? 87 years ago he stirred up working people against the tsar power and since that time Russia started building “communism”. His name is Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin is his party nickname). This year he would be 134 years old. All those years the portraits of this man decorated all the public institutions. He was on the medals, elevations of buildings and squares. In every town there is a street or a square named after him. His body is still kept in the mausoleum on the Red Square in Moscow. Every Soviet child knew his biography.
Now, when Russia is building capitalism, 15 percents of population doesn’t know who Lenin is. It is really amazing. Just imagine if the Chinese forgot who Mao Tse-Tung was!
In Kazan there are a lot of places connected with Lenin, but the main one is the University where he studied. Note that many our women also graduated from this University! It doesn’t mean of course that they are able to organize the revolution, but implies that they are very well educated. :-)
Days off: our Great Victory over the Fascist Germany
Next two weekends we have holidays. According the Russian law, if holidays concur with official days off (Sunday and Saturday), the days off extend to the working days. That’s why most Russian people will have a rest on 1, 2, 3, 4 May. Yes, Russian people do love holidays!
The First of May is the Holiday of Spring and Labor. We inherited it from the Lenin times. It was the holiday of workers, working for the communism good. On that day everyone was forced to take part in the demonstrations to show the solidarity of all the workers. These demonstrations took place in every town of the former Soviet Union!
And though now the ideological basis of the holiday disappeared, the holiday remained. Mostly because it concurs with the beginning of warm season, the start of gardening season, when people go out to their gardening plots and country houses - dachas, put them in order after winter. Young people usually go out of town for picnics.
The 9th of May is the day of our Great Victory over the Fascist Germany. On that very day our troops entered Berlin and raised the Soviet Flag over the Reichstag. With each year the number of these courageous people, who won the peace for us, is getting less and less. We lost in this war more people than the whole population of Canada or California, the most inhabited state of America. There isn’t a family in Russia that didn’t lose relatives in this war. We still don’t know the exact number of Russian people perished in this Patriotic War, so far the death-roll includes about 40 million people. That’s why we honored this day so much – May 9, 1945.
If you want to give a present to your girl on these holidays, then food, fruit or sweet baskets will be appropriate – everything that can be added to the festive table, as we have the tradition to lay the festive table and gather around it during the holidays. In spite of the official state days off, we, Chanceforlove team, will have a rest only on coming Saturdays and Sundays so that your correspondence won’t stop and nothing can hinder in your relations. So you can use our agency as usual. Enjoy!
