Make a date – but make it quick

Date: 2006-11-24

A HOUSEWIFE is holding a dating event to help bring single people together.

The event is the idea of housewife and mother Barbie Calvert, 35 of Emplins, Gamlingay, who was inspired to launch her own speed dating service after talking to a friend who is going through a divorce.

She says the event at the Holiday Inn Garden Court Hotel on the A1 at Sandy on Thursday, November 30, will be a great opportunity for singles and divorced people aged between 24 and 38 to try and find friendship or a new partner.

"The idea came to me when I was talking to a friend and the toddler group I go to and she was telling me about how she was going through a divorce and would never find another man as long as she lived," said Mrs Calvert.

"I started to ask around trying to wonder whether people would be interested in a speed dating night and the reaction was very good.

"My friend from Potton, who never even thought of trying speed dating and never thought she would find another man to spend her life with, was also very enthusiastic.

"It is very hard for people with children or who don't have children to find a date in a pub alone. But this is a chance for them not to stay home alone and be lonely."

The cost of attending the event is £15 and everyone will meet in the bar before the women go into a separate room where they will each have three minutes to interview each male guest, who will be given a score.

At the end of the night details of the men who have the highest scores with any individual woman will have them passed on. It is then up to individuals to contact each other.

Mrs Calvert, who is married to Kris 33, and has two children aged four and nine months, said: "This is a great opportunity for single and divorced people in Potton, Sandy and Biggleswade and the surrounding villages to meet a new partner and have some fun," added Mrs Calvert.
