Divorcee sues a lonely hearts agency over her eight dire dates

Date: 2006-07-05

When Janet Forse signed up with the New Horizons dating agency she hoped to meet her dream man.

A rugged, educated, muscular individual with his own home and a good sense of humour were among her specifications.

But the 49-year-old divorcee claims the agency put her in touch with eight social misfits. She said three men were unemployed and one of them lived in a caravan.

One potential partner, she said, was drunk when he phoned to arrange their first date.

Now Mrs Forse, a beautician, has lodged a claim at Gloucester County Court to have her £250 signing-on fee refunded and complained to her local trading standards department.

'The agency's literature says "more choices, less chances" and the man who runs it claims he filters out the people who won't fit to save you time,' said Mrs Forse, of Bream, Gloucestershire.

'I've been introduced to eight people and they've all been completely unsuitable.'

Mrs Forse, who has three grown-up children, has been single since her divorce in 1992.

She has had only one long-term relationship since, which ended last November, prompting her to join the agency.

She asked them to pick out a non-smoking, fun-loving man with a good sense of humour aged between 40 and 55. She wanted him to be financially secure with a semi-professional job and own his own home.

'I told them the kind of man I was looking for but it's as though they just ignored everything I said and just matched me with anyone who happened to be on their books,' she said.

'I asked to meet a rugged, well-built man, and they sent me on a date with a marathon runner. He was a lovely man but you just wouldn't put us together - he was so skinny.

'The first date I went on he was extremely shy and had no dress sense. The second, third and fourth were all unemployed and one of them lived in a caravan. One man phoned me to set up a date in a drunken state, which was quite threatening.'

Mike Lavender, who has run New Horizons for 15 years, claims the agency did its best to find Mrs Forse a compatible date but said the dating game was 'notoriously unscientific'.

He said: 'We sent the lady eight introductions and she said they were nice people but the chemistry wasn't there.

'We can only send introductions and it's not possible to please everyone. We've got many happy customers and many marriages.'

There are now more than seven million single men and women in the UK and increasing numbers are turning to introduction agencies, websites and dating events to find a partner.

With a dating agency, a person pays a fee to register and sends their details and requirements for a partner - such as age, height and hobbies. Agency staff are employed to match them with other members who seem to fit the bill.

The Association of British Introduction Agencies is an umbrella organisation which regulates the industry.

But in recent years traditional dating agencies have suffered with the rise of online websites, where men and women can post their own profiles and select potential partners. Last year more than five million people logged on to find love.
